In a bold step toward the protection and promotion of human rights in Nigeria, Civil Society Actors in Edo State has successfully secured the unconditional release of two innocent citizens — *Umukoro Henry* and *Godfrey Jonah* — who were wrongfully arrested and detained on allegations of murder by Officers of the Oghara Police Division and subsequently transferred to the Delta State Police Command Headquarters, Asaba for further investigation.
The milestone was achieved under the ongoing human rights advocacy campaign titled "BAIL IS FREE", which was officially launched today in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
Leading the charge for justice were prominent Human Rights Defenders including Rev. David Ugolor , Marxist Kola Edokpayi , and Ogbidi Emmanuel Ehis . Their coordinated intervention not only ensured the release of the innocent suspects but also led to the recovery of ₦500,000 — an amount earlier extorted from the families of the suspects at the Oghara Police Division. The money was fully refunded, with bank alerts confirmed.
Special appreciation is extended to the Delta State Commissioner of Police, the Deputy Commissioners of Police (Operations and CID), and the astute Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe for their professionalism and swift action in ensuring justice prevailed.
This development reinforces the commitment of civil society groups to uphold the rule of law, hold security agencies accountable, and defend the fundamental rights of all Nigerians.
