_...public reactions trail development_

The Lagos State government has in a circular, barred local government Chairmen in the State from appointing political office holders—noting that the elected Chairmen are only allowed to appoint Chief of Staff.

A letter released 31st July, 2025 and made available to the press addresses the subject matter.

"I write to refer to the directive of Mr. Governor at the swearing-in ceremony in respect of the appointment of political office holders in the local government and local council development areas, particularly the Supervisors, Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants".

Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Local Government, Kikelomo Bolarinwa (Mrs.), noted further, "I am to reiterate that, the appointment of Chief of Staff is the only appointment approved/permissible as you assume office, while other appointment should be stepped down until further directive".

This development has however sparked public reactions, particularly in the face of the much touted local government autonomy.

"It appears Tinubu's local government autonomy is the greatest scam of the 21st century", a critic noted.

"I thought we are supposed to be in the era of local government autonomy, how come State governors are dishing out directives on elected local government Chairmen as if they are appointees, this is not right", another observer noted.

The directive by the Lagos State government to local government Chairmen, and similar emasculation of local governments by State governors continue to generate wide reactions, casting shadows of uncertainties on the efficacy of the Supreme Court ruling of 2023, granting autonomy to local governments in Nigeria.

"That the apex court must rise up to the challenge and enact provisions to stop the unconstitutional overlordship of State governors on local governments", a Lagosian reacts.
