Students of colleges have been urged to join in the campaign against human trafficking and irregular migration being fronted by Edo State Government.
The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Anti Human Trafficking Issues, Comrade Solomon Okoduwa was speaking during a sensitization exercise at Edo National College, Iguobazuwa on Tuesday.
Addressing hundreds of the students, Okoduwa said they were in the school to sensitize them following the prevalent rate of human trafficking and related activities in the community.
The SSA who noted that the state government will not fold its arms to allow the illegal activities to thrive said it will beam its search light on the rural areas where human traffickers harvest teenagers.
According to Okoduwa, “the Governor Obaseki led administration is interested in your future. And he wants you to fulfill your dreams. Therefore don’t listen to those telling you about travelling abroad. They could use your parents or even your pastors to convince to embark on this perilous journey. The traffickers don’t care what you become in future but they want to use to make money for themselves.”
“Many of those trafficked died on their way or those who were able to get to Libya or anywhere in Europe are being enslaved, sexually exploited by their sponsors (madams). Don’t go, he warned.
Instead, Okoduwa advised the students to report anyone who encourages them to embark on a journey through the Mediterranean Sea and Sahara Desert to Libya.
He said many of the sponsors are already standing trial which the state government will be followed to logical conclusion.
The governor’s aide also assured that Anti Human Trafficking Club will soon be inaugurated across colleges in the state to collaborate with government in the fight against the menace of human trafficking and related crime.
An artist, Chidi Nnajinwa popularly known as Chi-One who was part of the campaigners, thrilled the students with his anti human trafficking campaign song titled “SAY No To Illegal Migration.”
However, the Executive Chairman of Ovia South West, Comrade Destiny Enabulele had earlier played host to Okoduwa and his team at the council’s secretariat, Iguobazuwa.
Enabulele who praised the Obaseki led administration following the government efforts so in the war against human trafficking also expressed the council’s commitment to collaborating with the government to stamp-out the scourge of human trafficking and irregular migration especially at grassroots.
The council boss was however optimistic that human trafficking will soon be a thing of the past.
