Edo state Government has pledged to pay the newly approved thirty thousand Naira Minimum Wage recently approved by the National Assembly and endorsed by the President but pending better improvement in Revenue generation especially taxes.
Governor Godwin Obaseki gave the pledge on Wednesday while addressing Workers at the annual May day celebration in Benin City.
The May day celebration has almost become annual ritual in Edo state with so much festivity without addressing key labour issues.
How ever this year it seems a radical departure from the past as the workers filled out in the Match Past.
it was observed that many Unions particularly those of the aggrieved Pensioners who were painfully adorned in black attire in the past two years wore white clothes an evidence that all may soon be well .
Spokesperson for the aggrieved PeUnions while pr Mr Gabriel Osenmwenkhai says although the Government has commenced accelerated offsetting of Pension- Arrears they are yet to touch Gratuities which is the actual bone of convention.
On his part, the Chairman Edo state Chapter of the Trade Union Congress ,Comrade Marshall Ohue also commended the state Government on some infrastructural development, Uniform administration of of Revenue collection , workers welfare including prompt payment of salaries and promotion but observed that it was quite frightening the appalling state of Bendel Newspapers , Edo state School of Nursing and Midwifery as well as Tayo Aptata University and College of Agriculture Iguoroakhi and urged the Governor to immediately address the problem.
The Chairman Edo NLC, Comrade Sunday Osayande had asked the Governor to also immediately address issues of Promotion and Promotion arrears, Labour House Project and the swift implementation of the thirty thousand minimum wage.
The Governor of Edo state, Mr Godwin Obaseki who was obviously elated at the panygerrics pledged outside the immediate implementation of the minimum wage sustained promotion , training and retraining of staff whom he acknowledged are the best assets of the state.
Obaseki also promised to complete and Commission all on going projects including hitherto abandoned Secretariat building , Court- Complex and Health centres across the state as well as total over haul of the state of owned Tertiary Institutions instead of leaving them in state of squalour that he inherited them.
He listed some of his achievements to include Edo best and improved securing architecture ..
