The Commission recognizes the critical role of the press as stakeholders in the fight against corruption.
The press in Nigeria continue to play critical role in holding government accountable to the people as well as exposing cases of malfeasance.
I sincerely want to thank everyone of you for your unflinching support in the fight against corruption.
We invited you here today to brief you on our efforts to rid the society of economic and financial Crimes, most especially internet fraud, (YAHOO YAHOO), cyber crimes and our collaboration with the federal Bureau of investigation, FBI in this regard.
As part of our strategic plans to tackle this malaise, the Benin Zonal Office, from January to date, through Intelligence raided the hideout of internet fraudsters in our jurisdiction, Edo, Delta and Ondo State.
These raids, successfully led to the arrest of 113 internet fraudsters.
While the prosecution of many of the cases are ongoing in court, we have so far secured 53 convictions in the period under review.
Several exotic cars were confiscated from the suspects. Other items recovered from the suspects are laptops computers, mobile phones, flash drives, internet modems and charms.
Our collaboration with the FBI led to the arrest of a female suspected cyber fraudster who work in collaboration with foreign counterpart in dark web.
She is involved in obtaining and stealing people's identification information which she forward to her America collaboration.
Her collaborator uses it to file for fraudulent tax return with the internet Revenue service.
She receives her cut through Bitcoin.
About 185 Bitcoin which by current market value is N656,371,490 (Six hundred and Fifty Six Million, Three Hundred and Seventy One Thousand, Four Hundred and Ninety Naira) has been traced to her.
The Benin Zonal Office independently arrested a cybercriminal and two siblings who are involved in Business Email Compromises, BEDC.
The suspect modus operandi was searching for victims email addresses especially official Business Email addresses, create a phishing link and compromising the process in order to defraud unsuspecting victims.
The three will have their date in court soon.
The Commission is resolute in exterminating cybercrime and bringing to book all those involved in this despicable activity.
However, we call on all patriotic Nigerias to support the Commission through information, as the EFCC alone cannot win the fight.
Let me on behalf of the Acting Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, IBRAHIM MAGU welcome our distinguished friends from the fourth Estate of the realm to the press conference.
As part of our advisory, we urge the general public to be more vigilant and circumspect, so that they do not fall victim of this misguided elements.
May I also repeat that the Commission will continue to count on the media as an ally in this task of combatting this monster.
Once again, l convey the profound appreciation of the Acting Executive Chairman, IBRAHIM MAGU to you all and charge you to expose people who, without any identification source of livelihood, continue to live large on other people's sweat.
We implore you to use your various platforms to sensitize the public on the ills of corruption and its consequences on the society.
