Sex for mark is an epidemic that is gradually on the increase in most university across the world recently.
As starling as the discovery may be, the act is not new in tertiary institutions in Nigeria, as some students, particularly the
female folks could be victims of predators who hide under the cover of lecturers.
Management of most universities across the country are no doubt unaware of such practices within the academic community but they either tend to look the other way, waiting until the name of the institution is dragged in the mud before they take action, or wait for drastic actions to be taken by concerned students before addressing the issue.
It is evident on the other hand, that students who could not sleep with lecturers to upgrade their marks when they failed a course had to settle it with cash as they are meant to pay between N3000 and N10,000 for a failed course , depending on whether it is a major.
While sexual harassment was fundamentally about exploiting power imbalance and voicelessness, it also had harmful impact on individuals, families and institutions.
The Vice Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, in Edo state, Professor. Ignatius Onimawo says the use of Information and communications technology, ICT to write the various Examinations in Nigeria universities will help to curb the menace of sex for grade since the power to utter scores a student will not be the hands of any lecturer.
Onimawo who said the act is unhealthy for our educational system is also advocating for the splitting of particularly course among there lecturers which he says will reduce the academic power of the lecturers to punish any student who refuses to be part for sex for grade.
Since the sex for grade video that was released by BBC went viral, the issue has been dominating public discourse among Nigeria students in various universities, Professor. Ignatius Onimawo who is the vice chancellor of Ambrose Alli university, Ekpoma in Edo state wants certain measures put in place to help checkmate the lecturers activities and reduce their power over the courses they lecture.
This University worker and some students who condemned the act, want stiffer penalty for the the lecturers who are involved in sex for grade, and also want student's dress code to be enforce on the various campuses in Nigeria to instill decency in their dressing.
The students say sex for grade if not nib in the bud now it will continue to reduce the morale of the intelligent students.
