The Ewu Royal tuzzle that have lingered for more than two decades from the lower to the apex court is unnecessary being a fight of two brothers that ought to be settled in a family meeting. Prince Jafaru Isesele Ojeifo is uncle to the sitting Onojie of Ewu, AbdulRasak Yusuf Isesele Ojeifo III. Thus they are suppose to settle any issue whatsoever in a family meeting as brothers to let peace reign.
The protracted chieftaincy tussle has become a source of worry to every patriotic son and daughter of Ewu. August 6 2019, made it exactly 22 years since the two contenders to the Ewu throne have been in court. Both parties have moved from the High Court to the Appellate Court, and now they are at the Supreme Court, where judgment is being awaited.
Father of the incumbent Onojie, HRH AbdulRasak Y. I. Ojeifo III was Prince Yusuf Ojeifo Isesele, who died four months before the passage of the immediate past Onojie of Ewu, His Royal Highness Isesele Ojeifo 1.
This is similar to what lead to the Onojieship tussle between the Ojeifo's and the Omosun royal family in 1930s, when the then Oba of Benin gave judgment in favour of Isesele against Osebhunu.
The Oba of Benin gave judgement in favour of Isesele Ijebor Ojeifo against Osebhunu Omosun in 1935 in order for the Royal lineage to continue in the right hand.
In that judgment, the Oba said if Omosun who was a regent, had vacated the throne, Ijebor, the son of Ojeifo would have ascended the throne, after performing his father’s burial rites.
It is however worthy to note that no one impose himself on the Ewu people. It is the abiding duty of the Ewu people to decide whom they want as their king, according to their culture, custom and tradition which exactly is what the good people of Ewu have done. Among my people, it is a common axiom “that no other person or persons make(s) the King except the people.”
To some extent, the crisis is a distraction of a sort, but it is certainly not affecting the development of Ewu. We are moving forward as a people and as a group to develop Ewu town.
For example, the Ewu Flour Mill that was moribund for years is now being revived. An illustrious son of Ewu has bought over the company. This is progress.
Ewu is a home to one of the best hotels in Esan land and Edo state today, the King Star Hotel and Suite.
We also have the Ewu Library and the EPF corporate stores among others.
The problem of gully erosion that has been giving our people a major concern has also being addressed by the World Bank.
It is however pertinent for the two brothers to settle themselves in a family gathering for peace to reign. Brothers will remain brothers.
