The Executive Chairman of Ikpoba-Okha Local Government, Dr. Eric Osayande has inaugurated the Ikpoba-Okha Emergency Response Team (COVID-19-IERT) to curtail the spread of the novel #CORONAVIRUS in the Local Government Area
The team which comprises of health practitioners, nurses, primary health caregivers and other relevant health, environment and wash educators has the Council Boss as its Chairman
Inaugurating the team at the Council Secretariat, Idogbo, Benin City, the Edo State capital on Tuesday, Osayande said, "CORONAVIRUS kills, but it can be managed if detected early"
Meanwhile, Dr. Eric Osayande has applauded the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki for his prompt response to the novel CORONAVIRUS when the news broke of the outbreak of the disease in Edo State; the Council Boss further reiterated his total commitment to continue to design preventive measures against COVID-19
The Primary Health Care Co-ordinator, Dr. Hope Ogiku while commending the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki for his proactiveness, hailed Osayande for towing the path of prevention as "prevention is better than cure" said Ogiku
The Council Boss urged the Local Government to be proactive and alert the relevant authorities immediately they notice anyone exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19
Stating further that the Local Government will adopt the State's Response Centres particularly the closest ones to Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area viz: Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Central Hospital and University of Benin Teaching Hospital (#UBTH) all in Benin City
However, the Council Chairman has identified three (3) Response Zones in the Local Government Area which are: Ogheghe Health Centre to be managed by Mrs. Rita Igbinomwanhia, while Ugbekun and Iwogban Health Centres will be managed by Mrs. Pat Aigbovia and Imuentiyan Oduwa respectively; individuals are expected to visit any of these centres for Information gathering for onward transmission to the State Response Centres
Dr. Eric Osayande has stated that ambulances will be stationed at strategic locations within the Local Government Area to be managed by the PHC Co-ordinator Dr. Hope Ogiku and Supervisory Councilor for Health, Hon. Diamond Ogieriakhi; he has also charged the Enigie and other traditional heads to assist in sensitizing the their various communities for increased prevention strategies
"So that the people will be aware that even if you have the CORONAVIRUS, it will not kill, but just inform us that you have it" Osayande advised
The Council Boss has directed the Treasury Department to release funds to the Health, Environment and Wash Departments of Council to purchase prevention kits; meanwhile, the departments of Wash and Environment has immediately swung into action to design sensitization exercises at the markets, parks and other public places; Dr. Osayande has also directed Council's security committee to liase with the security agencies Police, DSS, NSCDC, VGN to design strategies to minimize overloading in public transportation
Present at the inauguration were the Vice Chairman, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government, Hon. Jolly Osayande, Speaker of the Legislative Arm, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government, Hon. Kingsley Balogban, Councilors, Supervisory Councilors, top Council officials including health practitioners, market women leaders, traditional leaders, youths, women and political leaders from the Local Government Area

CORONAVIRUS disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus; most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment; older people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness
