As part of measures to mitigate the hardship caused by the Covid 19 virus lockdown, Edo State Government has commenced distribution of relief materials to the vulnerable and less privileged in the State.
Wife of the Governor of Edo State, Her Excellency Betsy Obaseki while handing over the relief materials to representatives of the various groups urged them to resist the temptation of being greedy and diverting the items for personal use or giving them to those who can afford it.
The First Lady of Edo State asked that people who can afford to feed during this lockdown should emulate government gesture and lend a helping hand to the vulnerable around them.
She further explained that the effect of hunger will be worse than that of the Covid 19 in the state and the nation at large if people continue to carry on without looking out for one another.
Her Excellency however led the beneficiaries in applauding government and health workers who are working assiduously to make things easier for the people of Edo State.
The items distributed include bags of rice, bags of beans, garri, noodles, oil, puree, millet, seasoning, soaps and detergent.
The State Commissioner for Social Development and Gender, Maria Edekor Esq. revealed that those who constitute the most vulnerable in the society to whom the government has chosen to dole out relief to at this stage of the pandemic are the elderly, returnees, people living with disabilities, prison inmates, children in correctional centers, rehabilitation centers and orphanage homes.
The Representative of the Comptroller General, Correctional Centre, Edo State Command, Imo Ikahokhuese said “honestly it’s a dream come true and we applaud government for this gesture”.
The representative of the Rehabilitation Centers in Edo State, Mr Omo Orhiavbele said “this is a yam from heaven; it is very wonderful, we have not seen it like this before. There has been so many viruses, there was the Ebola virus, Bird Flu, even HIV; but this one you remembered the weak, the vulnerable, people that cannot even go out to look for food, God will bless you”.
