Members of the committee on NATIONAL IDENTITY NUMBER (NIN), on Thursday 07/01/ 2021, paid an unscheduled visit to the office of the zonal commissioner of ICPC comprising Edo and Delta states, Mr Yesufu Olatunji.
The zonal commissioner who received the committee in his office in Benin City. The NIN committee led by Bishop Anthony Osadolor Ochei who is the Interim TEC Chairman of Edo Civil Society Organisations and doubles as NIN Committee Chairman stated the reason for the visit which dwelt basically on the extortion of citizens of various sums of money by the NIMC officials before their NIN can be issued them, he sought the ICPC's collaboration in assiging its staff to go with the committee on a verification and on the spot evidence to prove the allegations against them, rightly or wrongly.
In his response, Mr Yesufu commended the efforts of Edo Civil Society Organisations' members in fighting the scourge of corruption, stating that the fight against corruption should not be left in the hands of the commission alone, but that every hand must be on deck for it to succeed, he also outlined the shortage of manpower bedeviling the commission, hence the few staff available to it are dispatched to every other parts of its coverage area. He gave the assurance that in the course of findings on corruption and other related offences by NIMC officials and that if any defaulter is caught or spotted that his office would send men to effect arrest, once they are called upon.
The committee chairman thanked him for his reception and commitment to collaborate with EDOCSO in ensuring that Nigerians are not subjected to untold hardship.
