Edo State House of Assembly Repeals Some Provisions of 2019 Violence Against Persons Prohibition law

Edo State House of Assembly today repealed some provisions of the 2019 Violence Against Persons Prohibition law aimed at eliminating violence in public and private life and other matters connected thereto.

The amendment to the  bill  passed by the House in 2019 became necessary due to some deficiencies which the new law tends to address.

Moving the motion for the repeal of the law sponsor,  Hon. Henry Okhuarobo said the bill will help restore normalcy in private and public life and reduce the high statistics of assault on women and men .
Hon. Okhuarobo said in view of the prevailing challenges, the  bill in place will address various negative conducts and assist the vulnerable in the society.

Deputy  Rt.Hon Speaker Asoro who spoke in support of the amendment said it is to address the bottlenecks of prosecuting cases of violence against persons only in Abuja.
           
The House resolved into a committee of a whole where it  considered the amendment, citation clauses and other relevant  parts of the Bill.

The Speaker RT. Hon. Marcus Onobun  on return to plenary gave a progress report on resolutions while directing the Clerk ,Yahaya Omogbai to accord the bill a third reading.
            
Consideration of  the report of the House Standing Committee on public petitions by year 2000 pensioners on grounds of forceful retirement and abandonment for over twenty years signed by one Charles Akhimien and three others were slated for consideration on a later date.
  
The House during sitting also resolved that all operators of livestock farms and storage areas should be registered with the Ministry of agriculture and Natural Resources and other relevant ministries.

This followed a  motion by the Majority Leader Henry Okhuarobo and co-sponsored by all the Members, calling on the State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the ministry of of Health, Edo state board of internal revenue, the Commissioner of Police and other Security agencies to maintain a comprehensive data base on livestock in the state.
          
The Speaker thereafter  directed that clean copies of the resolution be forwarded to appropriate authorities.
