1st South-South National Chess Tourney Begins In Uyo July 1, Registration In Progress

The South-South chess zone and the Nigeria Chess Federation (NCF) in collaboration with Akwa Ibom State Chess association, have concluded plans to organise the first South South National Chess Tournament in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state capital, beginning from July 1st, 2022 to July 5th, 2022.


The FIDE rated tournament is scheduled to begin in July 1 and end on July 5,2022 in Uyo, with the coaching sessions and other skill enhancing activities of the programme scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt and Lagos between july 7 and 9,2022.


Egyptian GM Hesham a notable figure in the African chess community will be on ground as a resource person to impact on Nigerian chess players.


According to the organisers, registration of persons for the tournament is open and already ongoing with N5,000 fee.


The star prize is $1,000 USD while the second and third winners will pocket N250,000 and N150,000 respectively. Other prizes for different categories of participants including first timers and elites are in the range of N100,000, N50,000,

N30,000,N20,000 and N15,000 respectively. 


The tournament,according to the release by the organisers, will be followed by Chess Tactics Simultaneous against Egyptian GM Hesham in Uyo on July 1.

Other activities lined up include GM coaching session in Port Harcourt on July 7 and the programme will be concluded in Lagos with GM Coaching session, School and Chess Clubs visitations between July 8 and 9, 2022.


Speaking with the Nigerian Observer sports on the tournament and importance of the game of chess,the chairman, Continental Development Commission of African Chess Confederation Austin Apemiye said that chess helps to develop analytical skills and supports strategic planning. 

The chartered Accountant emphasized on the need for the southern Nigerians including Edo people, particularly students to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the South-South Chess tournament in Uyo.
