NIGERIA GRADUALLY JOINING THE LEAGUE OF COUNTRIES WITH WORST EDUCATION SYSTEM

Onoshoze of Edo state.

Education is a purposeful activity directed at achieving certain objectives such as transmitting knowledge, fostering skills and character traits. According to John Ruskin; Education is the leading of human souls to what is best and making what is best out of them. So, the second duty of government to the people is to see that they have means of moral and intellectual Education.

Nigeria education is in crises such as infrastructural decay, neglect, waste of resources and sordid of conditions of service. President Buhari 2021 Budget share for education is Nigeria's lowest in 10 years. Out of #13.08trillions Budget, #742.56b was allotted to education which is 5.6 percent of the total budget. And this further demonstrated the neglect of education in Nigeria. See this; 10.5 million children are out of school in Nigeria which is the highest in the world. Let us reform our schools and we shall find little reform needed in our prisons. Education and development go hand in hand. Lack of education causes poverty and slow economic development. Nigeria is gladually joining the league of the following countries with less value for education; South Sudan, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Mali, Zabia etc.

With the recent declaration of ASUU  to embark on strike which has kept the students out of school for the past four(4) months resulting from the failure of the federal government to fully implement the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement has also added to the copious factors dwindling the value of education in Nigeria. The incessant strike by ASUU has the following adverse effects on Nigeria education system;

*It influences the quality of academics  and University graduates  that we produce.

*It causes students to spend more time than the statutory duration in school.

* There is always an increase in crime rate in the society due to prolonged strike.

*It dwindles trust in our education system.

* It encourages hooliganism and prostitution.

*Condensation of syllabus.

* It discourages students from learning. Some students have long resorted to looking for opportunities to earn stipends and this situation makes education less interesting.

* It put the rich kids ahead of the poor kids who have the financial muscle to school abroad and in private universities in the country.

Let save the future of Nigerian students. I therefore appeal to the  conscience of our leaders to properly and adequately fund education to encourage effective research and avoid brain drain. Federal government should honour the agreement reached with ASUU to rescue the educational system in Nigeria. Show me a country with less value for education, I will show you a country with a retrogressive economy. Let's save our educational system. We cannot progress without education. Knowledge acquired through education, will help solve our national issues.
