The Edo South PDP Senatorial Candidate for the February 25 National Assembly election, Hon. Matthew Iduoriyekemwen on Friday, joined the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, Secretary to Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq., top government functionaries and other stakeholders at the groundbreaking for the Edo Education Hub.
The groundbreaking ceremony held at the former Ministry of Education building, Iyaro, Benin City, the Edo State capital.
According to reports, the Edo Education Hub upon completion, May 2024, will house a world-class library, PHC, a conference centre and other facilities, forming part of the ongoing education revamp in Edo.
At the groundbreaking, the Governor decried how education broke down in Edo, equating it with the dilapidated nature of the former Ministry of Education buildings.
The Iyaro buildings once housed the Ministry of Education in the State, until it was burnt down in June 2013 during the tenure of Adams Oshiomhole.
It has been abandoned, until Mr. Godwin Obaseki did the Friday groundbreaking.
Obaseki noted, "we are here today for the groundbreaking ceremony of the education hub, but coming here reminds us that education broke down in Edo State just like all these buildings; deterioration in education in Edo State equates to the type of deterioration that you see in the buildings of this premises".
"To govern education properly you must create the infrastructure that would help you govern education which includes the premises and offices; our leaders did that 50 years ago; we are not to lament but to fix, and give hope to the next generation", Obaseki added.
The Edo South Senatorial Candidate in his reaction to the groundbreaking ceremony, commended the Edo State Governor for his visionary leadership and commitment to rebuilding the education sector, which has ensured quality education in Edo State.
"I have observed the Governor's passion and commitment towards reinstitutionalizing education in Edo; from the reorganisation of the learning environment, to digitalizing teaching and learning at classrooms, building character and zeal in our pupils, calls for huge support by every stakeholder".
"Obaseki has paid very unique attention to the education sector and this can be seen paying off".
"This groundbreaking today marks another watershed, with a proposed world-class library, PHC, a conference centre and other life-changing facilities, one can attest to the fact that Governor is sincerely committed to reinvigorate quality education in Edo".
The Senator-hopeful pledged to continue to give his support to the Edo State Governor.
Iduoriyekemwen stated further that, upon assumption of office as Senator, Edo South Senatorial District, God-willing, he will fashion most of his programmes along the line of the Governor's, towards ensuring that the MEGA Agenda of the Edo State Government is collectively actualized across the 7 local government areas of Edo South.
He commended the education development experts in the Obaseki-led government for their zeal, professionalism and commitment.
At the groundbreaking ceremony were the Chairman, PDP, Edo State, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, other Candidates, traditional rulers, market women, youths, students and a host of others.
