2024 Edo Journalists Classic Dinner, Celebrating Excellence In Journalism

The 2024 Journalists Classic Dinner held by the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) was a highly anticipated event that took place on February 10th, 2024, at the prestigious Uyi Grand Event Centre, G.R.A, Benin City.

The event was attended by esteemed veteran journalists, distinguished guests, and prominent figures from various sectors, including the national President of the NUJ, Comrade Chris Isiguzo.

The event was designed to celebrate the accomplishments of journalists and foster camaraderie within the profession and it was a resounding success, marked by conviviality, gastronomic delights, and recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of journalism. The attendees were dressed in their finest attire, exuding elegance and sophistication as they gathered for an evening of camaraderie and celebration.

The ambiance was charged with excitement and anticipation, as guests mingled and exchanged pleasantries, reflecting on the significance of the occasion. Against the backdrop of lively conversations and animated laughter, the stage was set for an unforgettable evening honoring the dedication and resilience of journalists in Edo State.

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of awards to the best-dressed male and female journalists, a category that was carefully evaluated by a panel of judges comprising seasoned journalists and fashion experts. The judges took into account style, elegance, and sartorial finesse before bestowing the coveted awards upon two deserving recipients, Mr. Kingsley Eben-Enasco of Silverbird Media and Ede Ago of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), whose impeccable fashion sense and effortless charm captivated the audience.

The winners graciously accepted their accolades amidst applause and admiration, acknowledging the importance of personal presentation in the field of journalism. Their attire not only reflected a keen sense of style but also underscored the professionalism and dedication synonymous with the journalistic profession.

In addition to celebrating sartorial excellence, the 2024 Journalists Classic Dinner also recognized the invaluable contributions of investigative journalists in Edo State. These journalists have played a pivotal role in shaping public discourse and promoting transparency and accountability, thanks to their unwavering commitment to uncovering the truth and holding power to account.

The award for the best three investigative journalists was met with enthusiastic applause, as their peers and colleagues paid tribute to their tireless efforts in pursuing stories of public interest. Their ground-breaking investigations have shed light on issues ranging from corruption and malfeasance to social injustice, inspiring change and catalyzing dialogue within society. Juliet Sam-Asein of the Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS) emerged overall best investigative journalist, Usman Abdullahi of the Daily Trust second best while Benedicta Idalo of the Nigeria Observer newspaper emerged third position.

In his keynote address, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, the national President of the NUJ, commended the Edo State Council for organizing the memorable event and reaffirmed the union’s commitment to upholding the principles of press freedom and journalistic integrity. He emphasized the indispensable role of journalists as watchdogs of democracy and champions of truth, urging them to remain steadfast in their pursuit of excellence.

He said that, it was an honour to grace the annual get-together and describe the event as an invaluable initiative.
“Your dedication and hard work are commendable and I am grateful for the opportunity to join you all in this worthy celebration.” He added.

The Edo State Chairman of the Union, Comrade Festus Alenkhe thanked the journalists in the State for the support given to his administration since assumption of office. He explained that it is an opportunity for journalists in the State to interact and unwind and to fashion out the way forward.

On his part, the Managing Director of ITV/Radio, Engr. Elvis Obaseki commended the Chairman of Edo NUJ for his commitment towards uplifting the Union positively.

According to him: “What Festus has done in the last two years plus shows a man that has so much focus. Festus, we are with you and you know it is not just by words, but we are with you in action.” He said

The NUJ entertainment team spiced up the event with music. Other dignitaries at the event include, Immediate past president of the World Medical Association, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, PPRO, Edo State command.

The 2024 Journalists Classic Dinner served as a poignant reminder of the importance of solidarity and collaboration within the journalistic community. As journalists from across Edo State came together to celebrate their achievements and renew their commitment to the profession, they reaffirmed their collective resolve to uphold the highest ethical standards and serve the public interest.
