Benin Monarch Reaffirms Ban On Traditional Hairstyles , Mode of Dressing

Benin Monarch, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare 11 CFR, yesterday, reaffirmed ban on female headstyles and traditional dressing mode for funeral, marriage and birthday celebrations, in Benin Kingdom, just as he has placed curses on violators.

In a press release dated 12th February and signed by Chief Norense Ozigbo-Esere, the Osuma of Benin kingdom, Chief Edionwe Oliha, the Oliha of Benin Kingdom, Chief Osaro Idah, the Obazelu of Benin kingdom, Chief Okunoghae Edomwandagbon, the Ine of Benin kingdom, Chief George Igie Ekhator-Obasogie, the Obasogie of Benin kingdom, Chief Stanley Obamwonyi, the Esere of Benin kingdom and Chief Ada Igbinovia, the Eribo of Benin kingdom respectively on behalf of the palace of Oba, to enlighten the public particularly the people of Benin kingdom, it became clearer that the headstyles popularly known as okuku by female celebrants are mainly restricted to the Queen mothers ( Wives of the Oba) and not other persons.

It has also been resolved that the mode of dressing by men was absolutely spelt out as the men are authorised to use long bead with plain skirt ( obuluku), as they are restricted not to wear skirt ( buluku) with red colour inscribed palm trees, stars and moon designs as it is not known in Benin tradition 

The resolution also pointed irresistibly to the use of sceptre which is also known as Ada and Scemetre known as eben as a design for dress and or use in a ceremonial function.

The palace outlined the possible ways to design a male shirt but without Ada and Eben.

The palace also said that any violator of these orders would incur the wrath of the ancestors.

The high point of the press release was the august display of the pictures of hairstyles (okuku) which the women are not authorised to do as well as traditional dress the men should not wear since they are all abomination to act contrary in this regard.

The palace use this medium to advise parents and guardians to guide their children and wards against these practices.
