The Edo State House of Assembly under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku may have lost its vision, the institution is now prominent only for doing pro-Okpebholo biddings, rather than providing quality leadership, guidance and engaging advise to the executive—today's EDHA comes to the news only when it is executing notorious assignments on behalf of Okpebholo.
Even Obaseki's 10-man Assembly has proven to be more representative and responsible than what we currently have at the Anthony Enahoro Complex.
The Assembly's constant submission to all manner of requests by the State government, only reveals the quality of brains that are supposed to make laws to guide Edo's body polity—imagine the quality of laws that can be made for Edo by a people who see themselves as vehicle for primitive politics.
Having notoriously orchestrated the illegal removal of duly elected local government Chairmen, one would have thought that the Agbebaku-led Assembly would have learnt to be courageous and truly engaging—the House has become worse, making it appear more like a theatre for comical representation, incapable of executing any serious business.
Except for a few political hangers-on who see Members as vehicle to their political elevation, the vast majority of Edo people see the current EDHA as largely uneventful, uninspiring and lacking that quality required to drive policies for the good of Edo people.
The current House may have degenerated to a mere appendage of the executive, ejaculating obsessively over every document from government house, forgetting it has a thinking cap that must guide its approach, there is a thoughtless deference to every request from Osadebey Avenue—a sad and unfortunate era in parliamentary politics.
We have observed with utter dismay the Assembly's thoughtless submission to Okpebholo's requests, most of which are misplaced, worthless and brings no productivity to Edo, whether the leadership of the House has become so subservient for monetary gains or political preservation remains a mirage, howbeit, the Agbebaku-led Assembly will go down in history as the most notorious, anti-people, anti-democratic, directionless and cowardly, for failing to provide quality counsel where it mattered and standing on the side of government against the will and aspirations of the people—these failures, no doubt, provides a veritable ground for the total overhaul of the selection process of the people elected to our hallowed Chamber.
In Edo, kidnapping has become a lucrative deal, we have never seen a heartbreaking situation in Edo were captors stroll into banks, unchallenged, withdraw ransom and retire back to the forests, with citizens lamenting daily for help, while government looks away—we are not aware of any critical engagement between Okpebholo and the House to nip the scourge in the bud.
Agbebaku's Assembly must see Parliamentary politics not from the perspective of personal pecuniary gains or a thoughtless deference to the governor, but from a point of responsible stewardship aimed at providing direction for the people, whom are the primary responsibility of every government.
We hope sincerely that as we continue to navigate productive political path, our leadership selection process will be critical enough to throw up men and women of courage, capable of protecting the social contract agreement between government and people, defend popular opinions against unproductive executive requests, and not trade the people's expectations for primitive political gains.
Edo Radisson and the MOWAA are world class hospitality and cultural complexes that any visionary government should naturally shield from political invasion considering the global attention and economic muscle it attracts to the State, the Okpebholo-led government's lack of vision and policy direction remains a major setback for Edo, senselessly dismantling critical infrastructure—unfortunately, the Edo State House of Assembly has a become a willing tool.
Conclusively, we believe that the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Sheriff Agbebaku and his Honourable Member-colleagues will understand that the relationship between the executive and legislature must be engaging, not submissive, it must be a vehicle for forward-driven politics, and not for the execution of one's primitive political agenda, so that Edo people do not continue to see the hallowed Assembly as a hatchet for Okpebholo's primitive politics, as they already do.
