Investigate incessant kidnappings, failed govt policies in Edo—Gidigba urges EDHA

Crusaderhotnews

_...govt is serious business, don't present yourself willing tool to dismantle critical infrastructure in Edo_

By Gidigba Group

Gidigba—a Benin-based socio-political organization has urged the Edo State House of Assembly to rise up to the task of providing quality legislation and sound engagement with the State's executive arm for the good of Edo people.

The group chided the Assembly over what it called "uninspiring representation", noting that the Assembly has become too relaxed and comfortable, despite biting hardship and rising insecurity ravaging Edo State.

As if the Assembly is only out to massage Okpebholo's back, all we see is an Assembly in desperate and thoughtless move to execute pro-Okpebholo requests, without considering the plight of the vast majority of Edo people.

Gidigba urged the Assembly to show workings by engaging the Edo government on heightened insecurity in the State and failed or absence of government policies on critical sectors of the Edo economy, rather than falling over the government like a slave colony.

The Group noted that "Edo has become the kidnapping capital of the Country, where kidnappers now stroll into banks in the City, withdraw ransom money, and retire back to the forest, unchallenged".

"We do not know what deliberate efforts the Edo State House of Assembly is making, by way of engaging the State government and relevant security agencies to tackle the scourge".

"You cannot be seen to be a submissive or yes partner to the government, you must keep the government on its toes, rather than become more like a romance partner with it".

"Today, Edo has become a booming ground for kidnappings, from Edo North to Edo Central and Edo South, captors now invade homes to abduct victims for ransom".

Our highways have become deathtraps, unsuitable for travelling, nightlife is no longer a common phenomenon in the State, palpable darkness envelops Edo at night, and there don't seem to be deliberate security measures in place to address the menace, we think this should be of grave concern to the Assembly—and that residents should feel the impact of the House by way of developing policies, engaging the executive, and throwing up helpful engagements on security to protect lives and property of residents in the State.

The last few days has seen to a video of a young lady passionately appealing for public support from kidnappers' den, the incident which happened in Edo North has drawn significant traction in the media—only yesterday, residents in Edo Central took to the streets to protest against incessant kidnappings across towns in the district; kidnappings has become a lucrative business in Edo, perpetrators have become more daring, as if there is no government in the land.

"We think the Edo State House of Assembly should channel its energy towards the security of lives and property of Edo people whose lives have become endangered following the inglorious activities of daredevil kidnappers in the State".

In conclusion, Gidigba urged the Assembly not to reduce itself to a willing vehicle for the dismantling of critical infrastructure in the State, noting that legacy projects flowing from the past administration should be developed and built on, not dismantled in the guise of politically motivated investigations.

"We urge you to be engaging and thorough enough to sustain and expand critical infrastructure in Edo, politically motivated investigations aimed at stalling legacy infrastructure in the State should be seen to be downplayed in your line of duty—insecurity, failed policies, terrible roads, unemployment and a whole lot of undesirables abounds in Edo, we think your attention should be invested towards these regards rather than playing devil's advocate in a matter aimed at terminating iconic State facilities flowing from preceding government".
