BENIN CITY-: Minority Leader of the Edo State House of Assembly, EDHA, Hon. Barr. Charity Aiguobarueghian, Monday, cautioned the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC, against arbitrary demand and exploitation of the good people of his constituency in particular and the entire state in general, describing its moves as not only opprobrium and ill-treatment but a calculated attempt to inflict pains and anguish on the people over their statutory rights to electricity power supply.
Hon. Aiguobarueghian, made his grievances known to journalists at his office in Benin City, while playing host to the executive and members of Edo South Journalists Forum also known as OtuedoN'ogbebe, led by his Chief Convener, Comrade Edosa Okunbor, who were on familiarisation visit to the lawmaker.
The member representing Ovia North East Constituency 11, while giving account of stewardship, recalled how he had been able to use his formidable legislation to attract constituency projects like constructing Eight schools, construction/grading of earth roads and installation of electricity transformers across his constituency.
He also recalled how he had promoted human capital development in education by enrolling total number of 215 students for the West Africa Examination Council, WAEC, in the year 2025 and additional 182 in this year 2026, saying education remains a cornerstone for societal development.
Hon. Aiguobarueghian, who also a legal practitioner, blasted the BEDC for compounding the the prevailing epileptic power supply problem within his constituency despite his intervention dispositions in ameliorating the suffering of the people.
He recalled how he was able to influenced the purchase of a transformer through all the required legal process to Evbuomore community within his constituency and the efforts were thwarted by the officials of the BEDC , who usually demand arbitrarily between ₦3million and ₦4Million respectively to transmit energy to boost electricity in the locality even though it was the absolute responsibility of BEDC to supply electricity transformers for public consumption.
He queried the impunity level of the BEDC, just as he had advocated restructuring of the company to meet with the yearnings and aspirations of the people of the state, arguing that the epileptic power supply had crumbled economic growth of the area.
Hon. Aiguobarueghian also commended the initiatives of the Edo South Journalists Forum for putting up a formidable mechanism to build unity among the Benin speaking people.
He said the forum was long overdue especially in view of its aims and objectives in fostering peace, love and progress which had remained its core values.
The lawmaker, who has tenaciously thrown his support to the progress of the forum, however cautioned against mediocrity, insisting accountability and transparency remains the hallmark towards achieving the set goals for a viable society.
Earlier in his remarks, Edosa Okunbor, told the lawmaker that the executive and members of the forum were in his office in continuation of the familiarisation visit to prominent Benin sons and daughters who are occupying exalted positions to promote the noble course of the people.
He added that the forum was apolitical but pursues a course of good governance in the areas of collaboration to achieve the desired results.
