Governor Ademola Adeleke has secured a second term in office after winning the 2026 Osun State governorship election, defeating his closest challenger, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.
Adeleke, who contested the election on the platform of the Accord Party, polled 511,067 votes to emerge victorious, while Oyebamiji recorded 444,815 votes. The result gave Adeleke a winning margin of 66,252 votes.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke the winner after the collation of results from the state's 30 local government areas. His victory means he will remain in the Osun State Government House for another four years.
The election, held on August 15, 2026, attracted 15 candidates and was closely watched as an important political contest ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections. Adeleke's victory also represents a continuation of his political success in the state after his first governorship victory in 2022.
In the 2022 election, Adeleke, then a candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defeated the incumbent governor, Gboyega Oyetola of the APC. He secured about 403,000 votes and won the governorship after a closely contested campaign.
Four years later, Adeleke returned to the electorate seeking another mandate, this time under the Accord Party. His latest victory gives him the opportunity to continue the policies and programmes of his administration while strengthening his political influence in Osun.
The outcome has also attracted congratulatory messages from political leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who described Adeleke's victory as an assurance that democracy would continue to flourish in Nigeria.
Adeleke's re-election is therefore significant beyond the immediate contest in Osun. It demonstrates the strength of his political base and sets the stage for another four years of his administration, while the opposition parties will now have to reassess their strategies ahead of future elections in the state.
