BENIN CITY — Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to address what he described as Nigeria’s worsening fiscal and monetary challenges.
Obaseki made the call in a statement issued on April 15, 2021, urging the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, to rally Nigerians towards tackling the country’s growing economic difficulties.
The governor said his comments were not intended to create a confrontation with the Federal Ministry of Finance, but rather to offer what he considered useful advice in the interest of the country.
“Our advice is that we stop playing the Ostrich,” Obaseki said, stressing that the situation required responsible and committed leadership.
He urged the Federal Government to take decisive measures to halt what he termed the country’s “current monetary rascality,” warning that failure to act could worsen the prevailing economic challenges.
According to him, the Nigerian project must be approached with “all sense of responsibility and commitment,” rather than decisions aimed at merely pleasing the public.
Obaseki further advised the government to confront the country’s economic realities instead of avoiding difficult issues, noting that the consequences of today’s decisions would ultimately be judged by history.
“We believe it is imperative to approach the Nigerian project with all sense of responsibility and commitment and not play to the gallery because ultimately, time shall be the judge of us all,” he said.
The governor’s statement came amid growing concerns at the time over Nigeria’s fiscal position, monetary policy and the broader state of the economy.
