Benin City, Edo State — Concern is growing among members of the Benin community following reports that some Okaegheles have allegedly begun bringing police officers into the Oba’s Palace in Benin City, a development that residents and palace stakeholders say is creating tension and raising serious questions about the sanctity of the traditional institution.
According to concerns raised by members of the community, police officers have reportedly been brought into the palace in connection with disputes involving individuals within or around the palace environment. Those raising the alarm allege that the presence of law-enforcement personnel has been used to harass, intimidate, oppress or arrest people.
The development has generated particular concern because of the cultural and spiritual significance of the Oba’s Palace to the Benin people.
For generations, the palace has been regarded not merely as a physical residence, but as the centre of the Benin traditional institution and a place of profound cultural and spiritual importance. Any activity considered inconsistent with the dignity and sanctity of the palace is therefore likely to attract strong public reaction.
Critics of the reported development are now asking whether the increasing involvement of the police in palace affairs represents an unacceptable intrusion into the traditional institution.
Of even greater concern is what some members of the community describe as a new sacrilegious activity at the doorstep of the palace. They argue that allowing activities viewed as disrespectful to the sacred character of the palace to continue unchecked could undermine the reverence traditionally accorded to the institution of the Oba.
The situation has consequently raised calls for restraint, dialogue and a clear separation between legitimate law-enforcement responsibilities and matters that should ordinarily be addressed through established traditional channels.
Those making the allegations are also urging the relevant authorities and palace leadership to establish exactly why police officers are being brought into the palace, who is requesting their presence, and under what circumstances arrests are being made.
The issue is particularly sensitive because it touches on the relationship between modern state institutions and one of Nigeria’s most historically significant traditional institutions.
While the police have a constitutional responsibility to maintain law and order, community members insist that such responsibility must be exercised with due regard for the cultural status and dignity of the Benin Palace.
At the same time, any allegations of harassment, unlawful arrest or abuse should be properly investigated, and all parties involved should be given an opportunity to respond.
The immediate priority, concerned members say, should be to prevent further escalation and preserve the dignity, peace and sanctity of the palace.
The question now being asked across sections of the Benin community is simple but profound: Where should the line be drawn between legitimate policing and interference with the traditional institution of the Oba?
Until that question is properly addressed, the reported developments at the palace are likely to remain a source of deep concern among those who regard the Benin Palace as a sacred symbol of the history, identity and continuity of the Benin Kingdom.
