Obaseki Mourns Victims of Oluku Fire Disaster, Calls for Stronger Safety Measures

Crusaderhotnews

Former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has expressed deep sorrow over the Oluku fire disaster along the Benin–Lagos Expressway, which reportedly claimed lives, left several people injured and destroyed properties and livelihoods.

Obaseki, in a condolence message, sympathized with the bereaved families, the injured and residents whose livelihoods were affected by the incident, describing the tragedy as a painful reminder of the recurring loss of lives to preventable disasters in Nigeria.

He said the incident was particularly heartbreaking given the frequency of similar tragedies across the country, which have left families devastated, communities in mourning and survivors struggling to rebuild their lives.

According to him, the recurrence of such incidents raises serious concerns about systemic inefficiencies, inadequate safety measures, poverty and the failure to address known risks that continue to expose Nigerians to preventable dangers.

“As our people wisely say, a danger foreseen should not result in a disaster unprevented,” Obaseki stated, stressing that the country must not continue to accept such tragedies as inevitable.

The former governor called for a comprehensive review of safety standards, emergency response systems and the enforcement of relevant regulations to prevent future occurrences.

He noted that the Oluku disaster should serve as a wake-up call for government authorities and other stakeholders to strengthen emergency response mechanisms, enforce safety regulations and address the underlying challenges that contribute to such incidents.

Obaseki further stressed the need for meaningful action to ensure that the lessons from the tragedy are not forgotten, adding that the protection of human life must remain a collective responsibility.

He extended his thoughts and prayers to families mourning their loved ones, those receiving medical treatment and all persons who suffered losses as a result of the incident.

The former governor prayed that God would grant the bereaved families the strength to bear their loss, ensure the speedy and full recovery of the injured, and provide comfort to all those affected by the disaster.

Obaseki, who is also a researcher and scholar at the School of African Studies, Boston University, United States, reiterated his condolences to the victims, their families and the people of Edo State.
