BENIN CITY — The traditional expectation that husbands should be older than their wives is increasingly being questioned as some young men in Benin City choose to marry women older than themselves, prompting mixed reactions among residents.
While such marriages remain less common than unions in which the man is older, residents interviewed on the issue expressed differing views, with some saying age should not determine the success of a marriage, while others believe a significant age gap could create social and family challenges.
For many years, marriage in Nigeria has generally followed a pattern in which men marry younger women. National data support that pattern: Pew Research Center found that Nigerian men are, on average, older than their female partners, with the difference varying by religion.
The 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey also shows that men generally enter marriage later than women. The median age at first marriage was about 28.9 years for men aged 30–59, compared with about 19.8 years for women aged 25–49. In the South-South zone, the median age at first marriage for women was reported at 24.5 years.
However, residents say individual circumstances are changing the way some people approach marriage.
A resident who supports relationships between younger men and older women said love, understanding, financial responsibility and compatibility should be more important than the age of either partner.
Another resident expressed concern that couples with a substantial age difference could face pressure from relatives and the wider community, particularly where cultural expectations about the husband being older remain strong.
The issue is not entirely new in Nigeria. Previous reporting on relationships involving older women and younger men has documented both acceptance and social stigma, with some couples saying they faced name-calling and criticism from members of their communities.
Researchers have also examined the broader implications of age differences between spouses in Nigeria. A study on spousal age difference noted that the conventional pattern of men marrying younger women remains prevalent and examined how differences in age can intersect with power relations and other challenges within marriage.
For supporters of older-woman/younger-man marriages, however, the argument is simple: marriage should be based on the maturity and willingness of two consenting adults to build a home together, rather than a predetermined age order.
Critics, on the other hand, point to possible differences in expectations about children, family roles, health and long-term planning. Others are less concerned about the numbers and more worried about whether both families will accept the relationship.
As attitudes continue to evolve, the debate in Benin City reflects a broader question facing modern Nigerian society: Should age remain a major consideration in choosing a life partner, or should compatibility take precedence over traditional expectations?
For many residents, the answer ultimately depends less on who is older and more on whether the couple can build a stable relationship founded on love, respect, trust and shared responsibility.
