Suspended thugs on Tuesday attacked Lagos Street traders who had gone to protest at Okhuahe Community in Uhunmwode Local Government Area of Edo State.
The traders were allegedly ambushed and attacked by hoodlums working at the behest of the leadership of the Ikhueniro Community in Uhunmwode Local Government Area of Edo State.
The traders were at the Community on Tuesday morning to honour the invitation of the Community head, Mr. Ohenhen, Ikhueniro apparently to mediate over a case of alleged land encroachment into parcel of land being proposed as the permanent site for the traders by a private developer.
The meeting however resulted to a heated argument during which the traders were attacked by youths in the Community.
Some leaders of the union reportedly got a close shave with death.
The acting President of the union, Mr. Martins Eboigbe and another official of the union simply identified as Mr. Anas, were beaten to stupor during the disagreement.
A Spot utility vehicle (SUV) and mobile phones belonging to a former executive member of the union was allegedly vandalized and seized by the armed thugs.
It was learnt that the acting President of the association, Mr. Martins Eboigbe who was left for dead, limped to Okhuahe Police station apparently to report his alleged assault, but, he was detained on the order of Ikhueniro Community head.
The feud attracted outage and condemnation by the traders who demanded for his release him to access medical treatment.
A member of the Union who claimed to have attended the meeting at Ikhueniro, told our Correspondent in a telephone interview said that "The atmosphere was like a war zone.
"I thought Edo State government had banned Community Development associations (CDA's). I never knew that there are still armed thugs in our Communities".
"...They ambushed us and started beating us. The Community (Odionwere) sat down and watched his boys injure people...".
"Police are not helping matter in this Country at all", he said.
The Spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force, Edo State Command, DSP Chidi Nwanbuzor, said he was yet to be briefed.
"I am not aware of the case yet.
Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, had donated the sum of N12 million to facilitate possible relocation of traders in Lagos street in Benin City at the twilight of his administration as governor of Edo State.
