*My final plea with the privileged*
Do you know that our public primary schools no longer guarantee children ability to read? Most of these adult illiterates you see around actually attended primary school for six years, but was never trained to read.
To say it's a sad reality is to put it mild; we are actually seating on a keg of gunpowder of which Boko Haram; an extremist group that takes advantage of illiterate recruits is just a beginning, except a few of us rise up in defence of quality basic education of which the ability to read, write and think is at its heart.
The public school teachers must take responsibility, because if small private schools with supposed unprofessional teachers, meager salaries with no retirement benefits could train children to read in three years of kindergarten or early childhood education, the certified teacher under government employ has no reason whatsoever to deny our children the right to read after six years of primary education. This is totally unacceptable, but who will cry out on their behalf?
We will cry out to government and parents to put them on their toes, while playing their part too. We will plead with them to be teachers with conscience and support them with proven and time tested literacy facilitation skills. Our track record bear us witness. 42 schools and 16 adult centres have been liberated in the last nine years. We can go faster and wider with you behind us.
