Condemnations have continued to pour out from different parts of the country on what Nigerians now tagged as show of shame by the Department of State Service and(DSS) on their alleged invasion of Abuja court last week Friday to re-arrest convener of "revolution now protest" Omoyele Swore, 24hrs after he was granted bail.
The recent condemnation is coming from the Network of Civil Society Organizations of Nigeria (NOCSON) who on Tuesday condemned the action by the Department of State Service (DSS) and the subsequent re-arrest of Omoyele Sowore, convener of “revolution now protest”.
NOCSON said the action of DSS is uncivilized and an act of man inhumanity to man because according to them, “Sowore had been granted bail on several occasions by courts of competent jurisdiction.
Secretary General of the group, Mr. Ogbidi Emmanuel disclosed this during a public lecture to mark the “World Human Rights Day and Anti-Corruption 2019” held in Benin City, Edo State capital.
Emmanuel reminded the secret police and all other law enforcement agencies that every citizen still reserves their rights until proven guilty by court of competent jurisdiction.
He said the event tagged: “Stand up for Human Rights” is to reawaken the consciousness of citizens on the need to stand for their rights and demand from relevant authorities what is due them as a people.
He said several happenings across the nation today have in no small measure negated the United Nations General Assembly declaration on human rights, of which we must all condemn in its entirety.
Continuing, Emmanuel also condemned the sudden emergence of the controversial social media bill at the National Assembly which according to him, it is “unpopular” targeted to rob Nigerians of their freedom of expression.
He cautioned the National Assembly against resurrecting “such anti-people bill or smuggle same through the back-door”.
Also speaking, comrade Maxwell Iyamu, called on every Nigerian at all levels to unite against anything that will be inimical to the right of the citizens.
He appealed to Nigerians never to sit on the fence and to be seen as cowards on issues of national interest adding that a situation where one continues to feel it doesn't concern him or her will not help the country to move on.
