The Ikpoba-Okha Local Government in its efforts at preventing the outbreak of the novel COVID-19 in the LGA, has intensified the sensitization programme of the Local Government at markets, parks and other public facilities
On Thursday 2nd April, 2020, officials of the departments of health and environment, other members of the Council's Emergency Response Team were seen enforcing the Edo State Government's stay-at-home order at Oka Market in Upper Sakponba Road as well as discharging passengers from overloaded buses, kekes and taxi cabs as part of efforts to enhance the social distance policy, an integral precautionary measure against the spread of #CORONAVIRUS
The team which was led by the Speaker of the Legislative Arm of the Local Government, Hon. Kingsley Balogban comprised of the Secretary to Local Government, Barr. Osagie Igbinomwanhia, health, environment and wash professionals, Councillors, Supervisory Councillors, PA, SAs to6 Chairman, security operatives, youth leaders and other stakeholders from across the LGA
The committee frowned at the low level of compliance to the stay-at-home order by some traders were, locking up shops of defaulters who were neither traders of food and medical items, nor operators of eateries while reiterating the need for only traders of food and medicals to remain
Urging the traders and residents to maintain the social distance, observe regular hand-washing and apply sanitizers, the Balogban-led emergency response team thereafter moved from house to house reving up the sensitization exercise on Upper Sakponba area
Buses observed to have taken more than the prescribed number of passengers were impounded, decongested and asked to continue their trips while passengers were conveyed into other vehicles
The exercise which continue to yield results has been applauded by members of the public, some of whom have volunteered to join subsequent sensitization programmes; even as the team has vowed to continue to impose strict compliance of Ikpoba-Okha residents to the precautionary measures in the fight against COVID-19
Meanwhile, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government has taken delivery of another batch of hand sanitizers and other prevention kits which the Council Chairman, Dr. Eric Osayande has directed the committee to distribute to residents, traders and transporters in the LGA
