IYAMIDR, NUJ Seal Partnership

The leadership of Initiative of Youth Awareness on Migration, Immigration, Development and Reintegration (IYAMIDR) has sealed partnership with the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Edo State Council towards fighting the scourge of human trafficking and Irregular migration.

Solomon Okoduwa, the Executive Director of IYAMIDR was speaking on Wednesday 23rd of February, 2022 during an advocacy visit to Comrade Alenkhe and his executive members at NUJ Press Centre, GRA in Benin City.

Chief Dr. Eddie Ogbomo and 

Ehis Agugu congratulated Comrade Festus Alenkhe led executive for a well deserved victory at the Edo NUJ Election held on 17th of December, 2021.

Expressing confidence on the leadership, the Executive Director of IYAMIDR said "For us it is not just about the office but about the person occupying the office and with his team. We have known Comrade Festus Alenkhe for a very long time and the kind of person he is. 

To many people, he is a crime reporter and a seasoned journalist but to us who can attest to his competence and character, he is a development driver. A man who feels the pain of many others and obviously, he is in a hurry to make a remarkable impact, all these are evident in a few weeks into office. 

We have begun to see his historic transformation currently ongoing in Edo NUJ while many more are in the pipeline. Once again congratulations sir."

While stating some of the activities of their organization, the former Senior Special Assistant to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Anti Human Trafficking Issues reemphasized that "we are engaged in the fight against human trafficking in Nigeria with specific focus on the Niger Delta Region which for decades have been epic centre of such nefarious activities.

In its continuous efforts to cub this economically and socially defective the society, he said they have engaged various strategies mostly on advocacy and training of youths in various productive skills that will give them life-time earnings.

"After critical analysis of the economic viability inherent in gas pipe and marine welding, including the enormous opportunities available for certified trainees both in Nigeria and other oil producing countries across the world, we decided to collaborate with your leadership to further strengthen the capacity of your members with skills that will enable them boosts their income in this post Covid economy."

He said IYAMIDR has a robust partnership with Hungarian Training Institute Budapest according to him, "the institute is into Marine Welding, Gas Pipe Welding and Rail Track Installation and Maintenance."

According to Okoduwa, "This training if key into will help boost the capacity of NUJ members who are willing to participate thereby making Edo NUJ a hub of creativity an attraction in Nigeria.

"It will also interest you to know that there is already market for the certified participants either in Nigeria or oversea. The training is between 3 – 6 months and we are confident that our collaboration will attract sponsors that will facilitate the training of your selected members," Okoduwa added.

In his response, Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Festus Alenkhe thanked the group for  the Initiative to organize a project that is geared towards preventing crime, irregular migration and other form of Anti social vices.

He assured the group of the union's total collaboration to achieve the set goals.

Alenkhe promised to set up a viable working committee that will join hands with IYAMIDR to come up with a short term plan and long term plan from 2022/2023.

"This message should be taken to hinterlands, the message should be heard across the three senatorial districts using symposium and workshop to conscientise and sensitize the potential migrants on the danger of irregular migration. For the training, it is realizable and achievable, Alenkhe concluded.
