The Edo State governorship election holds next year; Gov. Godwin Obaseki would have rounded up his 8-year governorship cycle, and pass on the baton of State to his successor.
Edo State revolves around three (3) Senatorial districts, South, Central and North, while South, the Benin-speaking Edos and the largest ethnic group in Edo, being the political melting pot of the State, would have had a 16-year reing when Obaseki completes his 8 years next year, North, has had 8 years with Oshiomhole; Edo Central remains one district that have not had a fair share of political reign since the advent of the current democracy.
Consequent upon this, plus several other factors, perhaps, Gov. Godwin Obaseki affirmed recently that his succession must capture the spirit and letter of equity and fairness.
Although Obaseki has not stated whom his successor would be, political watchers however believe the Governor is determined to handover power to Edo Central, capturing the character of equity and fairness; Gov. Godwin Obaseki is a man of integrity, if he says he wants to handover power to Edo Central, he will do it, this will be on the back of popular support by Edo people, however.
Whereas Edo Central may be favoured in the 2024 arrangement, the need to access critically the character of persons amongst the spectrum of aspirants from that part of Edo cannot be over-emphasized; as we have often opined, Edo is no longer a tool for political compensation; on Obaseki's watch, the entity called Edo has radically deviated to a model for competitive development; not just any politician can be Governor.
To succeed Obaseki is to have a clear understanding of the ideals of the new Edo, bound by the love for State and driven by a vehicle fueled by policies, reforms, tied within the ropes of productive institutional networking for the advance development of our dear State.
Haven been a political player for ages is no longer a determinant of who governs Edo.
Today, the most principal prerequisite to be Edo State Governor, particularly 2024 and beyond, is to have that warchest to preserve, protect and sustain Obaseki's legacies and existing reforms, while expanding the State's frontiers for competitive development.
Amongst the pool of aspirants is one man who has shown that acumen, a family man from Okaigben, Ewohimi in Esan South East Local Government Area, for his excellent track record in the corporate community, Asue Ighodalo dwarfs other contestants for Edo's top job.
For his numerous contributions to Obaseki's success stories, he stands tall, ready, determined and appears able to hold firmly to the plough of providing effective, progressive and forward-driven leadership to Edo people same as Obaseki has done 7 years running, without looking back.
And if Ighodalo's emergence as Governor in 2024 will fill the vacuum of power sharing between the 3 senatorial districts, then Edo people, particularly the Edo Central must see EDO2024 as a sacred duty that must be done.
