Family of Lucky Enomwen Odeh, has regretted what is regarded as percussion arising from his inability to heed to the directives of his Kinsmen when are mainly his extended family members and villagers to circumcise his two female children as tradition demands.
It would recalled that the continued call for the abolition of the practice of female genital mutilation, popularly called circumcision, has been intensified through an agitation by the federal and the state government to the legislators at both houses of Assembly and national assembly.
Speaking with newsmen, a member of the Odeh's family, who pleaded anonymity, but refused to disclose his identity, said that circumcision has remained a long traditional practice in Benin Kingdom and that it is mandatory for every parent of Benin origin to circumcise his daughters to pave the way for sexual promiscuity in them.
He said further that whoever fails and refuses to abide by the traditional belief, would be compelled to face death or banishment after making spiritual sacrifices to appease gods and ancestors of the land.
The source added that when his brother had his first daughter, Miss Flourish Enomwengho Odeh, over 3 and half years ago, the traditional head of the family and chief priest of the village, called him to inform him of the already laid down rules relating to circumcision.
He noted that Lucky Enomwen Odeh who is a devoted christian alongside his wife, Mrs Oduwa Loveth Odeh, disregarded the order and on the very day they were carry out the practice on their daughter, the family members and the villagers who were bent on violating the rights of the innocent nuclear family, invaded their residence with the intention to force them to so do.
Having being informed of the coming of emissaries from the family head he (Lucky Enomwen Odeh), quickly left sent his wife and daughter to his friend’s house for safety and when emissaries found that the wife and daughter were not around they engaged him (Lucky Enomwen Odeh) in a fight that left him with a broken nose. Still disturbed about the development, especially having viewed it to be slight on their part for their son to disobey them, they launched a search against Lucky Enomwen Odeh and family with a view to forcefully circumcise the female daughter.
The source maintained that during that trying period, the family of Lucky Enomwen Odeh, had another daughter, born last year April 28 2022 and when the news was brokered to his extended family members and villagers, they became angry that he (Lucky Enomwen Odeh) has defied their tradition and since then, they started sending threat messages to him to either produce their two daughters for the circumcision or they would be killed.
He said that the innocent nuclear family was faced with different harassment and spiritual attack of various degrees and while the villagers were planning to invade their residence to kill them, information reached them to leave the house and that was how they escaped
The source further added that as if their escape was not enough, the villagers and the extended family members boasted to stop at nothing in carrying out their negative plans and that the police cannot unravel the circumstances since it was a traditional matter, stressing that they have circulated their pictures for them to be trailed, maintaining that even though the governments at all levels have been kicking against the practice, that they would continue the practice since it is inherent in the kingdom.
