Ahead of the September 21st 2024 gubernatorial election in Edo State, clashes between the main opposition party All Progressive Party (APC) and the ruling People's Democratic Party ( PDP) have left one man dead and many injured.
The deceased man identified as Barry Otas was said to have engaged and confronted a group of PDP supporters led by one PDP Happiness Samuel on a road walk .
Supporters of the two main parties in the state were said to have engaged in a heated arguments during a road show to campaign and sway the electorates as it was gathered that the planned campaign and road show degenerated into bloody violence.
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the tragic incident happened on May 10th as the supporters of the PDP drove their campaign vehicles to obstruct further movement of vehicles and passers-by along the busy Ugoneki road while the supporters of the opposition party marched in the opposite direction towards the direction of supporters of the PDP in their vehicles.
Following heightened tension and frayed nerves amongst the wild supporters of both parties, the ensuing chaos however degenerated into a violent fight as the supporters comprising mainly youths engaged in a free-for-all.
The eye-witness further said that as the violent fight continued, the Ugoneki road was abruptly closed on both ends of the road as vehicular movement was momentarily halted for several minutes when one of the APC supporters reportedly slumped and died on the spot while everyone present at the rally immediately scampered for safety.
It was said that the APC supporter first attacked as he slapped her in the face after griping her neck.
She was immediately rescued from his grip by a male supporter of the PDP who punched him in the face.
According to the eyewitness, Happiness Samuel immediately approached him and slapped him after loosening his grip on her .
The eyewitness further revealed that Barry Otas reportedly slumped and died on the spot immediately Happiness Samuel slapped and pushed him away in self-defense as eyewitnesses present on ground were of the opinion Happiness Samuel through voodoo means invoked diabolical charms to slap the supporter of the opposition party leading to his sudden death .
It was gathered that Happiness Samuel instantly took to her heels and fled from the campaign ground rally after she watched Barry slumped.
The unpleasantly bizarre scene instantly compelled others present on the Ugoneki road to scamper for safety thereby causing a serious traffic gridlock.
Meanwhile, the corpse of the deceased was however taken away and deposited at a local mortuary while a manhunt for the fleeing Happiness Samuel had commenced by the Edo State Command, a police statement stated.
The police in a statement furthet said it was working with other security agencies including local vigilantes to apprehend and arrest the fleeing Happiness Samuel for prosecution.
