BENIN CITY, EDO STATE — Residents and motorists in Benin City, Edo State, have raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of the city's popular Ring Road, also known as Oba Ovoranmen Square.
Recent reports indicate that several sections of the Ring Road have developed potholes and deep craters, making movement increasingly difficult for motorists and commuters.
The situation has reportedly become particularly challenging around the roads leading into the Ring Road, including Mission Road, Oba Market Road, Plymouth Road and Ibiwe Road. Residents say the poor condition of these roads is affecting traffic movement and creating an unpleasant image of the city centre.
Residents have also complained about the general appearance of Kings Square, including the presence of commercial buses, dirt and overgrown vegetation around parts of the area.
One resident, Osaro Idemudia, expressed disappointment with the situation, saying the Ring Road and Kings Square should reflect the status and identity of Edo State.
Another motorist, James Igie, called on the state government to urgently intervene, describing Kings Square as an important symbol of the state.
Government responds
The Edo State Road Maintenance Agency has acknowledged the condition of the Ring Road.
Its Managing Director, Engr. Felix Ibhade, said the state government is planning a full-scale asphalt rehabilitation rather than temporary repairs. He explained that rainfall has affected previous road-maintenance efforts and that work would proceed when weather conditions become more favourable.
The reports come at a time when Edo State is facing wider concerns over the condition of several roads, including major highways connecting Benin City with neighbouring states. The Federal Government has also announced measures concerning the deteriorating Benin-Asaba Highway.
