Fresh allegations circulating in political circles in Edo State have raised questions about the extent of influence allegedly wielded by a businessman identified as Sylvester Aigbogoh over the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo.
The claims, which have yet to be independently substantiated, allege that Aigbogoh has become an influential figure within the administration and may exercise significant influence over decisions ordinarily expected to be made by the governor and his government.
Some individuals described as close associates of the governor and people familiar with political developments in the state are reportedly questioning the nature and extent of the relationship between the two men.
However, as of the time of publication, no credible documentary evidence has been produced publicly to establish that Aigbogoh controls Governor Okpebholo or that he exercises governmental authority in Edo State.
Allegations of private interests
More serious claims circulating alongside the allegations of political influence suggest that government structures or resources may be being used to advance private commercial interests allegedly connected to Aigbogoh.
These claims require substantial documentary evidence before they can be treated as established facts.
Questions that would need answers include: What businesses, if any, are linked to Aigbogoh? Has his company or any company associated with him received government contracts? What procurement processes were followed? Are there financial records, corporate filings, contracts or official correspondence establishing a connection between the alleged private interests and government decisions?
Without such evidence, the claims remain allegations rather than proven misconduct.
What is known about the governorship?
There is no ambiguity in the constitutional or legal position regarding who occupies the office of governor.
Monday Okpebholo was declared the winner of the September 21, 2024 Edo governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission and subsequently assumed office on November 12, 2024. In April 2025, the Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal affirmed his election after dismissing petitions challenging the result.
The Edo State Government continues to officially identify Okpebholo as governor and has issued statements concerning the administration's policies and activities.
The question raised by the latest allegations, therefore, is not whether Aigbogoh is legally the governor — there is no evidence that he is — but whether an unelected individual may have an unusually significant influence over governmental decisions.
That is a question that can only be answered through evidence.
The “juju” allegation
Another particularly sensitive allegation making the rounds is that traditional or spiritual practices — popularly described as “juju” — may somehow be connected to the relationship between Okpebholo and Aigbogoh.
There is currently no credible evidence establishing such a connection.
Claims involving alleged spiritual influence are especially difficult to verify and should not be presented as fact without direct, independently verifiable evidence. A responsible investigation would require identifiable witnesses willing to go on record, documentary evidence, or other independently corroborated material.
What should investigators look for?
If the allegations are to be properly investigated, attention should move away from rumours and towards verifiable records.
Among the questions worth examining are:
Which companies are associated with Sylvester Aigbogoh?
Have those companies received contracts from the Edo State Government since November 2024?
Who owns the companies and who are their directors or beneficial owners?
What procurement procedures were followed?
Are there contracts, payment records or procurement documents connecting Aigbogoh or associated businesses to the state?
Does Aigbogoh hold any official appointment or position within the administration?
What decisions, if any, can be independently traced to his intervention?
Are there government officials or political actors prepared to provide evidence on the record?
What is Governor Okpebholo's response to the allegations?
These questions would transform a circulating rumour into an evidence-based investigation.
The need for answers
The allegations are serious enough to warrant scrutiny if credible evidence emerges, particularly where public funds, government contracts or the exercise of public authority may be involved.
But allegations should not be confused with established facts.
For now, the available public record confirms Monday Okpebholo as the governor of Edo State, while the claim that Sylvester Aigbogoh is the “real governor” remains an unsubstantiated allegation.
The real story, therefore, is not simply “Who is the real governor?”
It is whether there is evidence that an unelected individual has exercised improper influence over government — and, if so, whether that influence has affected public decisions or public resources.
Those are questions that deserve evidence, documentation and answers.
