Benin City, Edo State — The management of Benson Idahosa University (BIU) and members of the Edo State Civil Society Organisations (EDOCSO) have agreed to a one-week adjournment following a meeting over an alleged wrongful withdrawal of a student's admission.
The meeting, which reportedly ended recently, was attended by the university's Head of Admissions, Mr. Kingsley Ekhator, members of EDOCSO's Committee on Education, and other executive members of the organisation.
During the meeting, Ekhator reportedly apologised over the incident, explaining that the university did not deliberately deny the complainant admission. According to his account, the admission was erroneously withdrawn after the institution assumed that the applicant had abandoned the process following the expiration of the two-week deadline for tuition-related payment.
He described the incident as a communication failure rather than a deliberate attempt to deny the applicant admission.
Ekhator further indicated that the university was considering arrangements to create a new admission window to accommodate the affected applicant. However, the proposed arrangement is yet to be finalised.
The university's representative also denied allegations of fraud, maintaining that the incident resulted from a misunderstanding and assuring EDOCSO that efforts would be made to resolve the matter.
Following deliberations, both parties reportedly agreed to allow the university one week to address the concerns and work towards an amicable resolution.
The development offers a possible path towards resolving the dispute, although the complainant's admission status remains subject to the university's promised action.
Omobude Agho, who provided the update, said members of EDOCSO's Committee on Education and other executive members were present at the meeting.
The parties are expected to reconvene or provide further updates after the agreed period.
