Obaseki Condemns Attack on MC Porkupyne, Calls for Investigation, Pledges Medical Support

Crusaderhotnews

Former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has condemned the attack on Osagie Daniel Idedia, popularly known as MC Porkupyne, describing the incident as unacceptable and calling on security agencies to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

Obaseki, who expressed concern over the incident, said electoral violence was detrimental to democracy and warned that no political ambition, disagreement or electoral contest justified the injury, suffering or loss of life of any citizen.

He stressed that violence and intimidation had no place in a democratic society, urging relevant state institutions and law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation, identify the perpetrators and ensure that they face the full consequences of their actions.

According to him, the authorities must demonstrate impartiality and a strong commitment to protecting citizens and upholding the rule of law, regardless of the identities, political affiliations or interests of those involved.

The former governor warned against normalising violence in political and electoral engagements, noting that attacks and intimidation linked to political activities threaten the fundamental rights of citizens to participate in the democratic process without fear.

He added that failure to address such incidents could embolden criminality, undermine public confidence in government institutions and create conditions capable of disrupting law and order.

Obaseki also called on political leaders, their supporters and other stakeholders to exercise restraint, reject violence and resolve political differences through lawful and democratic means.

Expressing solidarity with MC Porkupyne, the former governor wished him a speedy and complete recovery and pledged to contribute towards the cost of his medical treatment.

He said the support was intended to ease the financial burden on the entertainer and his family during the difficult period.

Obaseki further cautioned against the emergence of a climate of fear and electoral violence in Edo State, insisting that accountability, justice for victims and the protection of citizens' democratic rights must remain priorities.

He reaffirmed the need for collective commitment to peace, justice, the enforcement of the law and the protection of human lives.

Obaseki is a research scholar at the School of African Studies, Boston University, United States, and a former governor of Edo State.
