The 6-month suspension without pay slammed on the Kogi Senator Natasha Akpoti comes with mixed feelings; whereas the rules of the Senate which Natasha is said to have violated guides the operationalities of the hallowed institution, the 1/3rd of the people of Kogi which Natasha represents at the Red Chambers, has just been stripped of their privileges of political representation for the next six months.
For some, the suspended Senator have exhibited courage, doggedness, fearlessness, boldness, having dragged Senate President Akpabio like tiger generator over issues of sexual harrassment; a matter that could have been resolved in-house with a few Senators amidst some drinks and small chops.
Personally, I am of the opinion that Senator Natasha could have handled the matter with conscious honourable and sanctity, particularly as the Senate represents Nigeria's highest lawmaking body, daily demanding the highest moral compass one could possibly exhibit.
If this issue hinged on national security, infrastructure, electoral reforms and other matters of overriding national importance, and then generated this kind of reactions from local and international quarters, it would have been a plus for the Senate, but that the institution became ravaged by matters bordering on sexual harrassment, and the accompanying reactions no doubt ridiculed the body of lawmaking in Nigeria.
Whereas Natasha may continue to draw accolades for expressing herself in the most vocal manner, suggestive of one with a trace of activism and social crusading, these qualities (activism, social crusading), and their likes, do not necessarily appeal in our contemporary political calculation.
Our politics has shown to enslave and strip one of his activist-tendencies, so much so that attempts to fight perceived "injustice" and protect one's "rights" when seemingly trampled upon, may be seen as disrespect and violation for the rules of the game, the exact situation Natasha currently finds herself.
Whereas the 6-month suspension thrown at Natasha does not suggest the end of life for her, I will, however, travel similar route with Senate Leader, that she considers the period to learn more about Senate rules, and find ways to submit herself to the rules of the game while serving her people, rather than engaging in activism and social crusading in a profession that demands absolute loyalty and total commitment to the rules of the game—politics.
