I will not hold Mr. Peter Obi responsible for his adult son's choices.

Crusaderhotnews

Parenting is hard, especially if you raised or are raising kids abroad, particularly in the West. No matter how hard parents try, if a child decides to take a different path in that kind of society, there is nothing you can do.

As a parent, you just continue to pray to God that He will touch the hearts of your children and help them turn out the way you desire. This is the same reason I never supported those who called the late Dr. Doyin Okupe names when his son went public with his sexuality.

Mr. Peter Obi's son's sexuality has nothing to do with his competence—or lack thereof—in seeking to run for the presidency of Nigeria. We should evaluate him based on his ability as a man and as a politician, and never on the kind of life his son chooses to live.

Former U.S. President Dick Cheney has a daughter, Mary Cheney, who is gay—even while her father was a sitting vice president. His ability as a political leader had nothing to do with his daughter. We must learn to separate issues.

I know ours is a very conservative society and some might want to use this news against Mr. Obi, but it would not be fair to do so. For me, Peter Obi does not have what it takes to lead this nation. He lacks the intellectual rigour, a deep understanding of the political economy of this country, and is highly simplistic in his approach to governance.

As a person who presently lives and works in the Western world, I have colleagues who are gay, and they are some of the nicest people I have ever met—ever considerate, thoughtful, and compassionate. Do I like their way of life? No. But that does not stop me from relating with them as fellow humans who are as good as anyone else around me.

Let us keep the debate on real issues, not on what his grown-up adult son is doing or not doing. It is totally irrelevant in the scheme of things as we march towards the 2027 elections.

And for some Obidients who are always quick to attack, abuse, and curse people on social media—be careful. I can imagine what some of you would do if this news were about Seyi Tinubu. I warn you all: keep the debate civil and focused on issues.
