PROF. ANGELA ANENE OKOLO – A LIFE DEVOTED TO SAVING NEWBORNS AND SHAPING THE FUTURE OF CHILD HEALTH.

Crusaderhotnews

It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of personal loss that I received the news of the passing of Dr. Angela Okolo, a distinguished Professor of Pediatrics, Chief Consultant Neonatologist, exceptional medical educator, and an irreplaceable pillar in the advancement of newborn and child health in Nigeria and beyond.

Prof. Okolo was not only a renowned scholar and clinician; she was a force of nature—an embodiment of resourcefulness, ingenuity, and unwavering passion. Her life’s work stood as a testament to her steadfast commitment to the survival, health, and dignity of every newborn child. She devoted her lifetime to teaching, research, and knowledge development, saving countless lives whilst nurturing and raising generations of champions in the field of child health.

On a personal note, Prof. Okolo played an instrumental role in the success of my newborn protection (Neonatal) initiative, “Make No Pikin Die,” in Edo State. From its conception to its implementation, she brought intellectual depth, practical wisdom, and an uncommon zeal for excellence. She did not merely lend her name or professional standing to the project; she immersed herself wholeheartedly in its execution. Her insight shaped its strategies, her voice strengthened its advocacy, and her hands worked tirelessly to ensure its impact was real and measurable.

She believed passionately that no child should die from preventable causes. That belief was not just rhetoric—it was the driving force behind her daily work. Whether at the bedside in the neonatal unit, in the lecture hall mentoring young doctors, or in policy discussions advocating for improved healthcare systems, Prof. Okolo demonstrated extraordinary dedication and courage.

Her contributions extended far beyond Edo State. She was a towering figure within the Nigerian healthcare community and a respected voice in global conversations on neonatal and pediatric care. Through her research, leadership, and mentorship, she elevated standards of practice and inspired excellence across institutions. Many of today’s leading pediatricians and neonatologists proudly count themselves among her mentees—a living legacy that will continue to shape the future of child health.

Prof. Angela Okolo’s life was one of service—service defined not by titles but by impact; not by recognition, but by transformation. She leaves behind a healthcare system stronger because she was part of it, countless families grateful because their children lived, and a generation of medical professionals empowered by her guidance.

As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate a life magnificently lived—a life poured out in compassion, scholarship, and unwavering advocacy for the most vulnerable among us.

On behalf of myself and all those whose lives were touched by her work, I extend my heartfelt condolences to her beloved family. May you find comfort in the extraordinary legacy she leaves behind and strength in the knowledge that her life made a profound and lasting difference.

I also extend my sympathies to the Nigerian healthcare community and to colleagues across the world who have lost not just a professional icon, but a mentor, partner, and friend. Her absence will be deeply felt, but her influence will endure.

May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace, and may her legacy continue to inspire us to work tirelessly toward a world where truly, no child dies needlessly.

Her Excellency

Dr. Betsy Obaseki

Former First Lady of Edo State
